CHICAGO -- Ian Kennedy has had enough problems getting run support from his offence. Fabinho Jersey . This time, he had to deal with a mental lapse by his defence. Kennedy struck out nine in six strong innings and Yonder Alonso hit a two-run homer to lead the San Diego Padres past the Chicago White Sox 4-1 on Friday night. Cameron Maybin hit his first home run of the season in the third inning, but also had a mental lapse in the fourth. With one out and Conor Gillaspie on second, Alexei Ramirez hit a routine fly to Maybin in centre field. Maybin thought it was the third out of the inning. He put his head down and started jogging in. Gillaspie noticed that Maybin was unaware of how many outs there were and tagged up to third without a throw. One pitch later, Gillaspie scored on Kennedys wild pitch to tie it at 1. "You hate to see that," Padres manager Bud Black said. "Cam, when he came in, the first guy that he went to was to Ian and apologized. Cam doesnt make those mistakes." It wasnt the first time Kennedy had to overcome a position player forgetting how many outs there were. "Ive done it before on the mound so at that point, for me, Ive just got to get over it. My job was to keep that runner there. Yeah, but he came up to me and apologized to me," Kennedy said. "It was after he hit the home run and I said, Make it up to me, hit another home run, I will forget about it." Kennedy (4-6) allowed one run and four hits with three walks. The right-hander has struggled to get help from San Diegos offence. Before the game, he ranked 98th out of 101 qualified pitchers with 2.79 runs of support per nine innings. He struck out the side in the fifth and Gillaspie leading off the sixth. Alonso finished with three hits as the Padres ended Chicagos three-game winning streak. Padres closer Huston Street pitched a perfect ninth for his 16th save in 16 opportunities. Nick Vincent and Joaquin Benoit backed up Kennedy with a scoreless inning apiece. "In this day and age the bullpen is so important," Black said. "Our guys have been pretty solid all year, pretty consistent. We saw that again tonight. We feel good about our pen. Its a big part of our early-season victories." White Sox starter John Danks (3-5) followed an impressive outing against the Yankees with seven effective innings against the Padres. Danks allowed two runs and scattered eight hits. He struck out four and walked one. "I for the most part was able to get the kind of contact I wanted," Danks said. "Obviously, made some mistakes and got burned for them, but all in all it was a good day." Danks pitched eight shutout innings last Saturday but ended up with a no-decision in Chicagos loss to New York. White Sox starters have 2.21 ERA in their last 10 games. "Theyve come along," manager Robin Ventura said. "I think theyre getting stronger as we go along. Where were at right now, you stay with them and we have confidence when they go out there." Maybin led off the third with a home run on a 2-0 pitch from Danks. It was his first home run since June 9, 2013, at Colorado. Danks got help from second baseman Gordon Beckham. Everth Cabrera put down what appeared to be a perfectly placed bunt, but Beckham dove at the ball in the infield grass and swiped the ball with his glove to Adam Dunn at first for the out. Rene Rivera led off the fifth with a double to the warning track in centre and later scored on Danks wild pitch to give the Padres a 2-1 lead. "Its kind of odd that they score a run on a wild pitch and we score a run on a wild pitch," Kennedy said. "Its crazy how the game works like that. For the most part, its nice to get that in the next inning right away." Alonso added insurance runs in the eighth with a two-run drive off reliever Javy Guerra, his fourth homer of the season. NOTES: Kennedy struck out 12 against Miami on May 8. ... Cashner has been on the disabled list, retroactive to May 15, with soreness in his right elbow. ... Black said LHP Robbie Erlin (3-4, 4.53) continues to rehab his sore left elbow in San Diego and there is no timetable for his return. The Ottawa Redblacks garnered the most attention with their trades during the CFL Draft Tuesday night, but the Edmonton Eskimos also made a significant move to land a solid, veteran player. Alex Smith Womens Jersey . As part of their return for sending the third overall pick to the Toronto Argonauts, who used it to select running back Anthony Coombs, the Eskimos received veteran offensive tackle Tony Washington. Washington spent the past two seasons with the Argonauts after starting his career in Calgary, helping the Double Blue win the 100th Grey Cup in 2012. The move reunites Washington with head coach Chris Jones, Torontos defensive coordinator the past two seasons. Along with Washington, the Eskimos also received Torontos first and second round picks, selecting wide receiver Devon Bailey and running back Aaron Milton, defensive back Otha Foster, and a negotiation list player. As part of the deal the Eskimos also sent their third round pick to Toronto, with the Argonauts using it to select defensive lineman Jaskaran Dhillon. Russ Grimm Youth Jersey . - The width of Alec Martinezs shin guard was the difference between the Los Angeles Kings and the Anaheim Ducks in their playoff series opener. Darrell Green Womens Jersey .Voegele will next play Anna Schmiedlova of Slovakia, who saved 10 of 16 break points to defeat Annika Beck of Germany 7-6 (6), 6-4.Also, Marina Erakovic of New Zealand defeated eighth-seeded Caroline Garcia of France 6-2, 4-6, 6-4. CHICAGO -- For the Cincinnati Reds, there was no better place to open a 10-game trip than Wrigley Field. Alfredo Simon lowered his ERA to 0.86, and the Reds beat the Chicago Cubs 4-1 Friday for their 16th win in their last 17 games at the Friendly Confines. Making his third start, Simon (2-1) allowed an unearned run in six-plus innings and sent the Cubs to their fifth straight loss. Simon, in the rotation while Mat Latos recovers from elbow and knee injuries, had made 99 relief appearances for the Reds before getting a chance to start this year. "Hes wanted more opportunity. Weve given that to him," manager Bryan Price said. "I think it was a good idea that we brought him into camp to start in case we had an injury or didnt have the depth. And our good fortune is that he came in ready to go and had a great spring and is off to a good start." Simon struck out three and walked two. "I feel great," he said. "I just tried to keep the ball down today and just try to (get ground balls)." Jonathan Broxton pitched a hitless ninth for his second save in two tries, completing a six-hitter for the Reds, who stretched their winning streak to a season-best three and have won four of five. Cincinnati, which won last years season series 14-5, went ahead on Billy Hamiltons RBI double in the fifth. The Reds made it 3-0 in the sixth when Zack Cozart hit a bases-loaded grounder to third, and second baseman Emilio Bonifacios relay for a double-play attempt went wide of first for an error that allowed Ryan Ludwick to score from second. Ludwick had reached on catchers interference by Welington Castillo. "Believe me, we dont take it for granted that were coming in here to win all the games," Price said. Doug Williams Jersey. . "I mean, we want to but we dont take it for granted at all." Jeff Samardzija (0-2) gave up three runs -- one earned -- and six hits in seven innings with seven strikeouts and two walks. He is 0-4 despite a 3.86 ERA in 10 starts since winning at San Diego on Aug. 24. "Its a tough day to hit with that wind," he said. "Its just the way it goes sometimes. You cant let it get to you." Luis Valbuena hit an RBI single in the seventh, ending a 24-inning scoreless streak for the Cubs dating to Sundays loss to St. Louis. Cincinnati scored another run in the eighth on a wild pitch by Justin Grimm. "I think we were a little sloppy in general, and Jeff really kept us in the ballgame throughout," Cubs manager Rick Renteria said. "I think well do better." CLEVELAND - The crowds deafening roar was so loud LeBron James couldnt hear his name announced. Nike Epic React Flyknit Dames .Unsure of whether to walk out onto the floor, he looked around and realized he was the last one left on the bench.Seconds later, James knew he was home.Cleveland fans welcomed the NBA superstar back with open arms and ear-splitting screams on Wednesday night as nearly 17,000 fans showed up to watch the Cavaliers hold their annual scrimmage, a glorified practice that provided a preview of what could become a spectacular season.Wearing the familiar No. 23 wine and gold jersey, the one he swapped for a No. 6 in Miami four years ago, James returned to the court where he took his first steps as a pro.As he waited on the bench to be introduced, James couldnt hear the announcer say, From Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary High School, No. 23 ... So James began walking out.I really couldnt hear it, he said. The fans were really loud and the PA was a little down, so I really couldnt hear it. I was the last person sitting on the bench, so I guess it had to be my time. But the roar was very well received and Im grateful to be able to be in this position where the fans welcomed me back like that. This ovation was in stark contrast to the one he got following the last game James in played for Cleveland in 2010. Following a 27-point loss to Boston in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference semifinals, a game in which he was oddly passive, James was targeted with boos and later questioned about his effort. Two months later, he announced he was signing with the Heat. But all has been forgiven, if not forgotten. For Cleveland fans, the sight of James once again on the Cavs home floor, soaring to the basket for a dunk or catching an outlet pass from new teammate Kevin Love, was something to behold.I cant believe this, said 19-year-old Alex Krocker from Bolivar, Ohio. Ive waited my whole life for a Cavs team like this, for a Cleveland team like this. Its crazy.Moments after the opening tip, James, who in a heartfelt letter declared he was re-signing with the Cavs on July 11, reminded Cleveland fans what theyve been missing. He was short with his first shot, a fade-away baseline jumper. But he grabbed his own rebound and calmly sank a 3-pointer.He followed that with a two-handed dunk and later drove the lane for one his signature slams, the kind of play that has elevated him to the worlds best player. The Cavs gave away 20,000 free tickets for the event and the team announced 16,723 showed up to watch the Wine squad beat the Gold 66-52. James scored 13 points, Kyrie Irving added 10 and Love had nine, but the numbers didnt matter. This was another first in a season of homecoming events for James. Before the Cavs took the court for pregame warmups, James gathered his teammates in a hallway outside the locker room and led them in prayer. He told them to play hard and play smart. Lets get better today. As they were about to exit the tunnel, James pulled a prank on unsuspecting rookies Joe Harris and Alex Kirk. James told the two youngsters to lead the team out, and when they started toward the court, the superstar held the rest of the Cavs back, leading to an embarrassing moment for Harris and Kirk.It was a good laugh, Harris said. While the Cavs were on the floor, first-year Cavs coach David Blatt was encouraged by the teams ball movement but knows the defence has a long way to go before its at a championship level.Overall the impression was positive, said Blatt, who started James, Irving and Love along with Tristan Thompson and Dion Waiters but hasnt committed to his first five. For me, you have starters and second starters, thats what makes teams good.Blatt has James, and thats all that matters.A successful international coach, Blatt will face his former team, Maccabi Tel Aviv on Sunday in the Cavs first official exhibition game. Its sure to be an emotional night for Blatt, who has witnessed Cleveland warmly wrap its arms around James again. Its a very special group of people who live here that appreciate things about people and about life that are admirable, he said. Im not surprised at all at how he has been received. Nike Just Do It Schoenen Kopen . CNN and Gazzetta dello Sport reporter Tancredi Palmeri broke the news via Twitter Tuesday afternoon. Italian Football Association President Giancarlo Abete has also resigned, according to Palmeri. Vapormax Flyknit 3 Heren . I kind of got a taste of being able to pick a suit with the draft lottery, I went with the bow tie.MIAMI -- Saying they reaffirm the teams commitment to the city, the Miami Heat announced Wednesday night that they have agreed to extend their partnership with Miami-Dade County another 10 years through 2040. The deal is still subject to approval by the countys commissioners, with a vote possible on May 6, and the announcement hardly assures that the extension is done. Heat managing partner Micky Arison, whose team plays in the county-owned AmericanAirlines Arena in downtown Miami, said the team struck the deal with Mayor Carlos Gimenez and that the pact includes an inflation-adjusted operating subsidy of $147 million from the countys Convention Development Tax fund, money he said will be reinvested into the building. "By any measure, the partnership between the Miami Heat and Miami-Dade County has been a hugely successful one," Arison wrote in a statement released by the team shortly before Game 2 of its Eastern Conference first-round series against the Charlotte Bobcats got underway. "Today, we are committing too keep that success going. Vapormax 2019 Heren. " Terms of the arena deal have been the source of much debate in South Florida for years, and not long after the Heat released their statement, Gimenez told The Miami Herald that the subsidy issue remains a major concern. "We dont have a deal that Im recommending," Gimenez told the newspaper. Arison cited an economic impact study conducted last spring that found the Heat and the arena generate $1.4 billion annually for the South Florida economy. "From the communitys perspective, this extension has already paid for itself and then some," Arison said. The team also says the deal provides "cost certainty for the franchise, a necessity in this age of punitive NBA luxury taxes." Arison said that will help the team plan future basketball spending. The tentative deal also calls for the Heat to make an annual payment to the county, earmarked for what Arison called "perpetually underfunded" parks and recreation activities for residents. ' ' '
SAN FRANCISCO - San Francisco Giants right-hander Tim Lincecum has no structural damage in his tight back and is expected to be available when the World Series resumes with Game 3 on Friday night. Mesut Ozil Arsenal Jersey .Thats the plan, athletic trainer Dave Groeschner said via text message late Thursday with word an MRI exam on Lincecums back was all clear. The two-time NL Cy Young Award winner was walked off the field by Groeschner during the eighth inning of San Franciscos 7-2 loss at Kansas City in Game 2 when his left lower back tightened. Lincecum retired five straight before exiting during Salvador Perezs at-bat.Before Lincecum had further tests, the Giants were waiting to find out how serious the injury was and whether they would have to replace him on the World Series roster. He played catch at AT&T Park early Thursday evening once the team returned to the Bay Area from Kansas City.Timmy feels pretty good today, Giants manager Bruce Bochy said Thursday. If somethings going on, then its obvious well have to make the change. But my hope is hes fine, and if he is, then I think hell be good to go tomorrow.Lincecum hadnt pitched since Sept. 28, not called upon out of the bullpen during the NL Division Series against Washington or the NLCS versus St. Louis. Lincecum missed pregame introductions before Game 1 Tuesday because he was vomiting.Lincecum said after Wednesdays loss at Kauffman Stadium that he didnt think the long layoff contributed to tweaking his back, noting he experienced more tightness than pain. He felt his back tighten up on the lower left side on one pitch and it didnt look so good so I decided to stop.Lincecum said his back felt better Thursday than it did after the game, even after the long flight home.Sitting on the plane was a little iffy. I just did my best to try to stay stretched out and keep it loose, he said. Well see how it progresses. It feels better than it did yesterday. We still have to wait and see.The 30-year-old Lincecum pitched the Game 5 World Series clincher at Texas and was a key reliever during the 2012 title run and four-game sweep of Detroit. While Lincecum pitched his second no-hitter in 11 months against the Padres on June 25, the struggling four-time All-Star was moved to the bullpen in late August. It showed that he continued to work in the bullpen, Bochy said. He had a great session three days ago, so he showed good command. He looked comfortable out there. So I didnt like the score, but I was glad I was able to get him out there and get him some work. I know he has to feel good about that outing. I know we do, so he could play a bigger role now if hes healthy. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang Jersey . -- Wichita State is all alone in the record book. Sead Kolasinac Arsenal Jersey . With the win, the Marlies complete a three-game series sweep of the Admirals and move on to the second round of the Calder Cup playoffs. T.J. Brennan added an empty netter with less than 25 seconds remaining for his second of the playoffs. METAIRIE, La. -- All-Pro tight end Jimmy Graham and the New Orleans Saints met Tuesday for arbitration on his contract. Graham filed a grievance through the players union. He contends he should be considered a wide receiver, not a tight end, when the team designated him with the 2014 franchise tag. The difference in salary would be more than $5 million. Arbitrator Stephen Burbank is conducting the meetings that also involve the NFL Players Association, the NFLs Management Council, and the Saints. No ruling is expected immediately. The Saints gave Graham the franchise tag for about $7 million as a tight end, the position he has been listed at for his entire four-year career. But he believes because he often is split out away from the tackle, he is a wide receiver. Petr Cech Jersey. That franchise tag is worth about $12.3 million. According to an analysis by ESPN Stats and Information, Graham lined up split on 67 per cent of his snaps: 45 per cent of the time in the slot and 22 per cent out wide. But the Saints note that he made the All-Pro team and the Pro Bowl as a tight end and was drafted as a tight end. Such disputes are not frequent, but draw lots of attention because they can set a precedent. Baltimores Terrell Suggs, the 2011 Defensive Player of the Year, argued in 2008 that he should be tagged as an end, not a linebacker. The difference back then was about $800,000. Suggs wound up signing a new deal with the Ravens, then helped them win the 2012 NFL championship. ' ' '
Roy Hodgson has until midnight on Tuesday 31 May to trim his 26-man squad to the 23 players hell take to Euro 2016. Doug Flutie Womens Jersey . But who will miss out? Hodgson is expected to issue his final squad list this afternoon, after a training session in Watford, a delayed announcement after the injury to Danny Welbeck forced a late change of plans.Back-to-back 2-1 friendly wins over Turkey and Australia will have left the England manager with plenty to think about - especially after 18-year-old wildcard Marcus Rashford scored on his international debut on Friday night. Hodgson coy on final selection Roy Hodgson on his selection dilemmas ahead of Euro 2016 Here, we look at seven players whose inclusion is far from certain and consider their chances of making Hodgsons final squad…Jack Wilshere  Jack Wilshere appears to have proved his fitness to Hodgson After playing 66 minutes against Turkey and the first-half of Englands win over Australia, it seems Jack Wilshere remains a key figure for Roy Hodgson. The inclusion of the Arsenal midfielder in the initial squad despite an injury-ravaged season in which he made just three first-team appearances highlighted Hodgsons faith in Wilshere and he now seems set for a ticket to Euro 2016.Both of them [Wilshere and Jordan Henderson] are a little bit short of match fitness but certainly for Jack Wilshere the last couple of games shows that his lack of match fitness isnt very evident. I thought he was very good in the first half he played [against Australia], said Hodgson.Former England caretaker boss Peter Taylor is also adamant Wilshere should go to France. Speaking after the win over Turkey, he told Sky Sports News HQ: Wilshere is so different, such a clever player, he could play for Barcelona. Hes such a talented player. You want that type of different midfield player for your options, whether you start him or bring him on as sub. Id be wrapping him up in cotton wool.Marcus Rashford Marcus Rashford was congratulated by Hodgson on Friday Marcus Rashford was 3/1 to make Englands final 23 when the provisional squad was first named. Only Fabian Delph was more likely to be axed. But after a stunning introduction to international football - combined with injury concerns for Daniel Sturridge - the Manchester United teenager could be on his way to Euro 2016.It took the 18-year-old just three minutes to find the net against Australia and Hodgson was full of praise for the youngster after the game. What a debut. Im pleased for him, said the England boss. But I wasnt surprised with the way he played. He was always one of the players who was seriously competing for a place in the 23 and hes done his chances of travelling with us no harm. He wouldnt be out of place in anyones 23.Ross Barkley Ross Barkley was a second-half sub against Australia Ross Barkley enjoyed his most productive season with Everton in the Premier League in 2015/16, scoring eight times and registering the same number of assists. However, a drop-off in form towards the end of the campaign appears to have damaged his chances of a key role for England this summer and he was overlooked for a starting spot in either friendly.A raw talent, Barkley is likely to be an important figure for England in years to come and remains a likely traveller to France - if only as a squad member.  Andros Townsend Andros Townsend hopes to have made an impression Andros Townsend was out of the England reckoning in March but forced his way back into Hodgsons plans with an impressive run of form for Newcastle. However, after playing just 14 minutes across the two friendlies this month, his position in the camp is once again in doubt.Everyones desperate to go to a major tournament, he said after his run-out against Australia. What a huge honour it would be if I did, but Ive done what I can and now well see what the manager decides.Townsend is one of few genuine wingers in Hodgsons provisional squad and has enjoyed a number of fine performances in an England shirt under the manager. But he is likely to be one of the names debated by Hodgson and his coaching staff.Danny Drinkwater Danny Drinkwater played 90 minutes against Australia He may have been an integral part of Leicester Citys Premier League title win but Danny Drinkwater is among the three favourites to be cut from Hodgsons group of 26. The central midfielder was subbed on for the final 17 minutes against Turkey but played the full 90 against Australia. With Eric Dier, Jack Wilshere and Jordan Henderson vying for a similar role in the team, he could be the unfortunate one to miss out. Dier seems set for a starting spot, while Wilshere has been praised by Hodgson, who also dismissed concerns over Hendersons fitness problems.Daniel Sturridge Daniel Sturridge has missed both friendlies with injury Daniel Sturridge was Englands first-choice striker at the World Cup but injuries have limited the Liverpool mans playing time over the past two seasons and, despite returning for the Reds run-in, a calf problem kept him out of both international friendlies this month. The forward is due to return to training on Sunday and Hodgson has told the press his injury problem isnt likely to affect his ability to play in Englands Euro 2016 opener against Russia on June 10. However, the manager also stopped short of backing Sturridge for a place in the squad. It seems the 26-year-olds tournament chances remain up for discussion.Fabian Delph Fabian Delph is all but out of contention for a place in the final squad Manchester Citys Fabian Delph was a surprise inclusion in Hodgsons provisional squad of 26, given his injury problems and struggles to break into Manuel Pellegrinis plans this season. Now, a groin injury has effectively ruled him out of contention for a place on the plane. The midfielder was unable to travel to Sunderland for Fridays friendly with Australia and Hodgson said: That means probably he wont be with us either in the final 23, unless, of course, we have injuries. Ive put him on a standby list and he understands and accepts that. The Highlanders had hoped the Fiji-born winger would be ready to play against South Africas Sharks in Dunedin on Friday but assistant coach Tony Brown told local media that Naholo was still some way off full contact training. We havent really made a plan for Waisake yet. Were getting him back running, hes doing that at the moment, Brown said. Once he can take a bit of contact, well make a plan for him. With less than a week until the NHL Trade Deadline, check out the latest trade-related reports and speculation from around the NHL beat. Cheap NHL Jerseys From China . And follow TSN.ca right through Deadline Day for all the updates. Is that Your Final Answer? The Pittsburgh Penguins are reportedly ponying up in their efforts to lure Ryan Kesler out of Vancouver. Rob Rossi of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reported a proposed deal between the Pens and Canucks that he credited to multiple sources. “A proposed deal would send Kesler to the Penguins in exchange for Brandon Sutter, two 2014 draft picks — likely a first- and third-round — and the Canucks choice of defensemen Simon Despres or Brian Dumoulin,” Rossi wrote on Saturday. Rossi continued to say that it is possible the deal could involve another player going in either direction, but that Penguins GM Ray Shero was only looking to acquire Kesler. Goalies Gone Wild The Minnesota Wild are apparently very much in the market for an upgrade between the pipes. According to Michael Russo of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, Wild GM Chuck Fletcher is after a netminder and was even in on discussions for former Buffalo keeper Ryan Miller before getting priced out. So, who fits the bill for Minnys playoff push? Russo drops a lengthy list that spans from new Sabres acquisition Jarsolav Halak to established number ones like Martin Brodeur and Cam Ward to enigmatic Oilers netminder Ilya Bryzgalov. Snowfall Warning? Could this be Paul Stastnys last week as a member of the Colorado Avalanche? The Denver Posts Adrian Dater writes that if the Avs are unable to get the 28-year-old re-upped before the deadline, they could deal him rather than risk losing him for nothing over the summer as an unrestricted free agent. "You want to keep winning and dont want to break that chemistry, but at the same time if something happens, it happens. Its just part of the business. Some things I cant control and I just worry about what I can control — and thats playing hockey," Stastny told the Post. Dater believes the Avs could probably expect a young defenseman in return and one that might still have time left on an existing deal or, if not, a pending restricted free agent. Call Me, Maybe? Jaromir Jagr is an intriguing name to watch prior to Wednesday. The 42-year-old just became the NHLs seventh 700-goal scorer and – as a pending unrestricted free agent – could be an attractive veteran addition for many teams as they push towards the post-season. But the iconic Czech winger cautions that any team looking for his services should probably run it by him first. “The situation with me is I think if any team would try to trade for me they would probably ask me first if I wanted to go there,” Jagr told the Star-Ledger after the New Jersey Devils Saturday win over the New York Islanders. “I dont have a contract (for next season) and Im 42 years old. What if I decided to go home? Nobody is going to give any draft picks or players for me if they dont know. “Same thing happened when I went to Boston (from Dallas last season). They called before. So Im probably going to know whats going on before.” Wholesale NHL Jerseys 2020 . Pierce has been diagnosed with a non-displaced fracture of the third metacarpal of his right, shooting hand, the team said Monday. He was hurt Friday in the first half of a loss at Houston. Pierce has struggled badly in his first season in Brooklyn, but the disappointing Nets can hardly afford another injury. They just got back All-Star centre Brook Lopez but have still been playing without starting point guard Deron Williams and key reserves Andrei Kirilenko and Jason Terry. Pierce is on pace for the worst season of his 16-year career. His average of 12.4 points and .368 shooting percentage would easily be the lowest ever for the No. 2 career scorer in Boston Celtics history. Adidas NHL Jerseys 2020. The Celtics dealt Pierce and Kevin Garnett to the Nets in a summer blockbuster that hasnt worked out nearly the way the Nets hoped. They are 5-12, barely ahead of the New York Knicks for last place in the Atlantic Division. Joe Johnson is the only starter on a roster worth more than $180 million in salaries and luxury taxes who has appeared in every game. Pierce will miss the first matchup against the Knicks on Thursday. Next week, he was scheduled to face the Celtics for the first time Tuesday and former coach Doc Rivers, now with the Clippers, two nights later. The 36-year-old Pierce has made just 27 per cent of his 3-point attempts, including a potential tying miss in the closing seconds of a loss to the Lakers last Wednesday. ' ' '
TORONTO -- Randy Carlyle had plenty of chances to hold his breath. Mikal Bridges Suns Jersey . At one point his Toronto Maple Leafs gave up the lead on a breakaway and another time had a power-play goal waved off. But when goaltender Jonathan Bernier stopped Reid Boucher in the shootout, the coach and players got a chance to exhale with a 3-2 victory over the New Jersey Devils Sunday night at Air Canada Centre that snapped their losing streak at four. "Well, we can breathe," Carlyle said. "Theres been a lot of gasping going on, and even in this game there was a lot of gasping going on (with) how tight it was. ... Hopefully this relieves a little bit of the stress thats involved for our hockey club." Plenty of stress had been building up for the Leafs (22-20-5), who hadnt won since the Winter Classic. They still have just two regulation victories in 26 games dating to Nov. 21 and arent yet back in a playoff spot, but the sound of their victory song -- "We Cant Stop" by Miley Cyrus -- brought with it some relief. "Well take any points we can get right now," defenceman Cody Franson said. "Weve had some tough bounces lately, and weve put in some efforts that couldve went either way, and fortunately tonight we were able to get a couple points due to a shootout. You try and manage your emotions with shootouts not getting too high, but for us its a little bit of weight off our shoulders." Bernier made 36 saves on 38 shots in regulation and overtime and stopped all three he faced in the shootout to do his part to end the skid. James van Riemsdyk and Tyler Bozak had the Leafs goals, and van Riemsdyk scored in the shootout to beat a fatigued Devils team playing its third game in four nights. "I think under the circumstances, that team over theres desperate (and) we were coming in here short-handed and under a tough schedule," New Jersey coach Peter DeBoer said. "I thought we gave them everything they could handle. Theyre probably pretty fortunate they got two points and we feel a little bit robbed, but thats the game and weve got to pick up and move on to Montreal." Adam Henrique and Ryane Clowe scored for the Devils (19-19-9), who fell to 0-7 in shootouts this season. Jaromir Jagr, Clowe and Boucher were all unsuccessful this time. "The way weve been in shootouts, lets get it out," Henrique said with a laugh. "I mean, they try things with shootouts, I think everyone has different opinions on it." Opinions varied during the game, too, especially on the call by referee Ghislain Hebert that negated Bozaks power-play goal at 6:23 of the third period. Hebert ruled that van Riemsdyk interfered with Devils goaltender Cory Schneider. Carlyle said it was one of those plays it was hard to agree with the official after looking at it on the replay. Van Riemsdyk agreed. "I was very surprised," said van Riemsdyk, who scored his 17th goal of the season in the second period. "I looked at it after on video in between periods and Im still kind of wondering. He gave me his thought and I asked him if he could watch it after the game and maybe next time we have a game he can apologize or something because that was pretty brutal." It would have been Bozaks second of the night and eighth of the season. Instead, it represented another roadblock for the much-maligned Leafs to overcome. Carlyle estimated his team had 15 scoring chances leading up to that point. "For the next 12 minutes we didnt get any," he said. "So it just shows the mental state and how, I guess, fragile we were at that point." But the Leafs didnt cave. Earlier on in the night they withstood a 7-1 shot deficit and gave up a breakaway goal to Clowe -- his first of the season -- 27 seconds after van Riemsdyk scored to give them the lead. In managing to push the game to overtime and then a shootout, Toronto left things to chance. But players were happy to get tangible evidence of the improvement they saw in a loss at Washington on Friday night. "Our job is to win games," captain Dion Phaneuf said. "We know that the points just keep getting bigger and bigger, and I felt that we stuck with it tonight against a team that played very well." DeBoer was more than satisfied with his teams effort, saying players competed their butts off. "The shootout doesnt take away from the effort that we gave tonight," DeBoer said. Schneider, who made 23 saves on 25 shots, said it was a bit upsetting not to come away with the victory. On Saturday night, the Devils beat the Florida Panthers with two seconds remaining in overtime but couldnt pull off a similar trick against the Leafs. That wouldve been a crushing result for Torontos players, who needed something to go right. "We needed this bad," Bernier said. "We found a way. If thats what it takes to go into a shootout and get points and move on like this, it feels good for the confidence." NOTES -- Five Leafs players -- Bozak, winger Jerry DAmigo, defencemen Tim Gleason and Mark Fraser and goaltender James Reimer -- missed Sundays morning skate with illness. All but Fraser were in the lineup. ... Schneider started for the Devils despite making 29 saves in an overtime victory Saturday night at home. Coach Peter DeBoer said its "always a decision" because of franchise goaltender Martin Brodeur but elected to go with Schneider because of his strong performance against Florida. Kevin Johnson Jersey . -- Wes Welker is unlikely to suit up for Denvers game Thursday against San Diego after leaving Sundays win over Tennessee with his second concussion in four games. Elie Okobo Jersey . -- Another baseball tradition is about to largely disappear: a manager, with a crazed look in his eyes, charging the field and getting into a face-to-face shouting match with an umpire. TORONTO -- Four games, four wins, two shutouts and just three goals given up. Martin Jones entry into the NHL just keeps getting better and better. The 23-year-old from North Vancouver stopped 38 shots and Jeff Carter and Kyle Clifford scored third-period goals as the Los Angeles Kings beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 3-1 for their fifth straight win Wednesday. Jones, who grew up a Canucks fan, has now beaten two Original Six teams in Montreal and Toronto in addition to wins over the Islanders and Anaheim. "I try not to think about that too much," he said when asked about his impressive run. "I just make sure Im ready when I am called upon, just try to give these guys a chance to win. Weve got a great team here. Its not like Im getting called upon to steal games here, its give these guys a chance to win, a couple of big saves here and there." It was athlete-speak worthy of a veteran. But Jones, who stopped 18 shots in the third, flashed a big grin when asked if he was having fun. "Yeah, Im trying to enjoy it as well," said the former Calgary Hitman who has spent the last three seasons with the Kings AHL affiliate in Manchester, N.H. Jones, whose hot hand has eclipsed ex-Leaf Ben Scrivens in the absence of injured No. 1 Jonathan Quick, now boasts a .974 save percentage, 0.74 goals-against average and has stopped 111 of 114 shots. Carter beat former teammate Jonathan Bernier with a wrist shot between the legs on a two-on-one at 9:40 for his eighth of the year. Defenceman Paul Ranger failed to keep the puck in the Los Angeles end, creating the odd-man rush. "Bad decision," said Carlyle. "In a 1-1 hockey game with 10 minutes left, its an ill-advised pinch," he added. Clifford added an insurance goal with 1:59 remaining. Drew Doughty also scored for Los Angeles (21-7-4) before 19,375 at the Air Canada Centre. Cody Franson scored for Toronto (16-13-3), which deserved better on the night. "By far it was our best effort in the last couple of months," said Toronto coach Randy Carlyle. "But no reward for it. And we have to use it as a starting point." The Leafs were without captain and top defenceman Dion Phaneuf, serving the first half of a two-game suspension for a weekend hit on Bostons Kevan Miller. But winger Joffrey Lupul returned after a seven-game absence due to a groin tear. The Leafs showed more jump than a Los Angeles team playing for the second night in a row but were unable to convert their advantage into goals. Carlyle said his players showed their frustration. "Theyre down," Carlyle said. "Because we had so many opportunities, so many offensive chances." Things dont get any easier for the Leafs with away games at St. Louis and Pittsburgh sandwiched around a visit Saturday by Stanley Cup champion Chicago. The Kings arrived riding a season-high four-game winning streak, hot on the heels of a 6-0 win in Montreal, and were 11-1-4 in their last 16 games. The Leafs, meanwhile, had just two regulation wins in their last 17 starts (a stretch during which they went 6-8-3). "Its like pushing that snowball," sighed Carlyle. "It seems every time you lose, it gets bigger." Los Angeles had outshot their opponents in 21 of their pprevious 31 games. Jamal Crawford Jersey. In contrast, the Leafs had been outshot in 27 of their 31 previous games. But on this night, Toronto outshot L.A. 11-8 after the first period, 21-16 after the second and 39-23 at the end. "We didnt play too well at all," said Doughty. "Probably one of our worst games in a while." Jones had to be sharp early, stopping James van Riemsdyk from in close after a fine rush by Lupul. JVR had another chance minutes later, shooting wide on a nice feed from Nazem Kadri. But Los Angeles scored first on the power play at 10:30 of the first period, on a high wrist shot by Doughty from the top of the circle. It was his sixth goal of the season and the 200th point of his 396-game career. Peter Holland was in the box for holding as the Leafs penalty kill, which came into the game ranked 26th in the league, continued to wobble. Jones stopped Nikolai Kulemin from point-blank range twice later in the period. The Leafs outplayed the Kings in the first period but trailed 1-0 as the visitors extended their record of not allowing a first-period goal in 17 straight games. That made for some Twitter banter. "Thoughts on the first period?" asked the Leafs official Twitter account. "It was pretty pretty pretty good," replied the Kings, via their official account. The Kings record when scoring first improved to 15-2-2. Jones stopped Phil Kessel all alone after the Leafs sniper stole a pass and broke through the defence early in the second. It took the Kings 5.5 minutes to get a shot on net in the period. Kings forward Colin Fraser was helped to the dressing room midway through the second period after running into Frazer McLaren near the bench. There was no penalty on the play. McLaren did go to the box after a spirited scrap with Jordan Nolan, son of interim Buffalo Sabres coach Ted Nolan. The Leafs had their chances but either misfired or were denied by the steady Jones. That changed when Toronto took advantage of a 64-second 5-on-3 chance after Doughty joined Willie Mitchell in the box with 5:57 remaining in the period. Franson scored 27 seconds later, snapping a shot from a poor angle at 14:30 on a slick cross-ice pass from Kessel, with Jones unable to slide from one side of the net to another in time. It was Fransons first of the season. But Jones prevented further damage by stopping Lupul from in close with the second penalty about to expire. Doughty scored seconds later when he jumped out of the box but the play had been whistled dead for an altercation between Lupul and Slava Voynov at the other end of the ice. Bernier heard the whistle and did not attempt to make the save. "I let Slava know he screwed me out of a goal," Doughty said wryly. The Leaf goalie saved Lupuls blushes early in the third when he stopped a Justin Williams backhand after a Lupul giveaway in front of net. Jones made several big saves as the clock wound down to preserve the lead. NOTES -- Rookie defenceman Morgan Rielly returned to the Leafs lineup after being a healthy scratch the last three games. John-Michael Liles sat out the game ... For the second night in a row, Toronto FCs Brazilian target Gilberto was at the ACC. He saw the Raptors lose Tuesday to San Antonio. ' ' '
TORONTO – The Blue Jays play the rubber match of their three-game series with the Yankees on Sunday. Jordan Greenway Jersey . With a win, Toronto (3-3) would head into its first off-day of the regular season above .500 and with the Astros coming to town for a three-game set starting Tuesday. KRATZS FIRST START Catcher Erik Kratz was looking forward to being behind the plate for Drew Hutchisons start on Sunday afternoon. “I like his demeanour,” said Kratz. “I like how he goes after hitters and hes not afraid of contact. Hes going to go right after these guys and Im excited about it.” Its been a whirlwind couple of weeks for Kratz. Acquired from Philadelphia in the offseason, along with pitcher Rob Rasmussen, it was assumed Kratz would have the inside track to be Dioner Navarros backup because hes an offensive threat. Kratz lost the job to Josh Thole, who has a lengthy track record catching knuckleballer R.A. Dickey, but was recalled in time for opening day when Casey Janssen went on the disabled list. “Theyve been up and down for sure,” said Kratz. “When I got sent down I was disappointed but when I got called back up obviously youre excited again. Its something that, its part of the game, its part of where Im at in my career.” He understands the business and knows there are limited opportunities to impress. But Kratz is familiar to the organization, the Blue Jays drafted him in 2002, and hes confident hes built up enough of a resume during his time in Philadelphia. He hit 18 home runs in 375 at-bats over the last two seasons. “I cant sit here and say, Oh man, this one at-bat that Im going to get off the bench is going to make or break my season,” said Kratz. “Its something that you do have to take advantage of your opportunities. Ive been fortunate to have opportunities in the big leagues so Ive put together a little bit of a resume.” Should he be called upon to catch Dickey this season, Kratz has confidence in his ability to receive the knuckleball. “Its as good as its been,” said Kratz. “I think he said it right and he knows the pitch the best. I definitely improved. Is there room for more improvement? Absolutely. I think its something that, getting that comfort level out in those games, lights are a little brighter than in spring training. Just the more reps I can get the more comfortable Ill get.” WALDEN “SHOCKED” AT CALL-UP Needless to say Marcus Walden was surprised when his contract was purchased from Triple-A Buffalo on Saturday. “I was definitely shocked,” said Walden. “I saw that they were calling up Chad Jenkins. I didnt hear of a 10-day rule, I had no knowledge of it, so my skipper called me in and I was shocked. Really shocked.” The 10-day rule to which Walden is referring applies to players optioned to the minor leagues. Players on option already are on the 40-man roster and if theyre sent to the minor leagues, they must spend 10 regular season days on option before theyre eligible to be recalled. The lone exception is to be an injury replacement when someone on the big league roster is placed on the disabled list. The Blue Jays intended to recall Chad Jenkins but, because hes on option, he isnt eligible for call up until April 10, the 11th day of the regular season. Walden wasnt on the 40-man roster, hence his contract being “purchased,” and so he was selected as Jeremy Jeffress replacement when Jeffress was designated for assignment. Walden, 25, is a sinkerball pitcher who relies on ground ball outs. His career minor league strikeout rate of 5.4 per nine innings reflects his approach. He missed most of 2009 and all of 2010 after undergoing Tommy John elbow ligament replacement surgery. Walden made a number of adjustments to his training regimen as a result. “Ever since then Ive kind of changed a lot of stuff about working out and doing a lot of things to get myself ready to pitch,” said Walden. “At the end of the day I think its paid off.” Walden swears by yoga; he estimates he participated in 40 to 50 sessions in the offseason. Hes considered one of the strongest players in the Blue Jays organization and he credits yoga. “I think its something, it kind of gets people to be more limber and more flexible,” said Walden. “If youve got really big, strong, tight muscles it does you no good. The more limber you are, the more flexibility you can have, the looser your muscles are to help with not having injuries.” ,b>POSITIVE SIGN For the first time in franchise history, the Blue Jays first three wins of a season have come with the club scoring fewer than four runs in each of the victories. The starting pitching, with the benefit of improved defence, is off to a much better start than last year. Its early but the Blue Jays 3.78 starting staff ERA has the team on track to vastly improve on last seasons 4.81 ERA amongst starters, which ranked second worst in baseball. Devan Dubnyk Jersey . -- A year ago, Flavia Pennetta was close to retiring from tennis. J.T. Jimmy Walker was involved. He is becoming more difficult to ignore with each victory. Walkers nine-shot win at the Sony Open — the largest margin on the PGA Tour in nearly six years — was his fourth victory in the last 15 months, the most of any American in that stretch. His world ranking is No. 13, moving him closer to his goal of playing in the Olympics.More work remains, starting with the majors, and Walker knows this.Last year was his first time playing all four majors, and while he didnt seriously contend in any, he still had top 10s in the Masters, U.S. Open and PGA Championship. Thats not a bad start, and Walker has shown to be a quick study and a hard worker.Of all the new experiences from 2014, though, what stood out was Sunday at Gleneagles. The Ryder Cup long had been decided when Walker won his singles match against Lee Westwood by making eight birdies in 16 holes. With key wins early from Europes two major champions, Rory McIlroy and Martin Kaymer, there was no reason for television to pay much attention to a match that affected only the final score. But it was a big deal for Walker. He believes his performance on such a big stage, and what he learned from that match, will take him to a higher level. The Sony Open is miles away from the Ryder Cup in so many aspects, though it caused him to reminisce the way he never let up until it was over. That was huge, that Sunday match against Lee, Walker said. That was another day where I didnt want to let him have anything. After the Ryder Cup I said, I need to figure how to get in that mode, where every shot means so much. Thats how it felt. I was so engaged in every shot I hit. Ive got to try to figure out how to do that week in and week out. And thats how I felt today. His second straight victory in the Sony Open was important for a couple of reasons. It was his third straight year with a PGA Tour victory, and it was right after he lost a tournament he felt he should have won.Walker doesnt feel as if he let up at Kapalua, though he was surprised by the quick turnaround. He missed one shot that led to bogey and missed two birrdie putts inside 10 feet as Patrick Reed played the last four holes in 4-under par, including an 80-yard shot he holed for eagle. Mikko Koivu Jersey. Reed won with a birdie in the playoff.Given another chance six days later, Walker was ruthless. He showed the capacity to turn a two-shot lead into four, and a four-shot lead into eight. Thats the kind of golf he saw from Jordan Spieth last month at the Hero World Challenge when Spieth won by 10 shots; from Martin Kaymer at the U.S. Open last summer when he won by eight at Pinehurst; from Rory McIlroy in the first two majors he won (each by eight shots); and from Tiger Woods more times than he can remember. There was one moment when Walker even looked like Woods. One of the more fascinating moments of Woods 15-shot win at the 2000 U.S. Open came late in the final round at Pebble Beach when he hit a flyer over the 16th green and chipped to 15 feet. The tournament was over, and had been for hours, but Woods was stalking and crouching and concentrating over that putt as if he were tied for the lead. Woods buried the putt and showed as much emotion as he had all day.Later, he revealed that his sole purpose was to not make bogey in the final round. He played the last 26 holes of a U.S. Open without one. From behind the 14th green at Waialae on Sunday, and ahead by six shots, Walkers chip ran about 6 feet by the hole. With only his coin on the green, he stood over the putt and took a few one-handed swings. Finally, he replaced the ball — but still not the coin — and stood over it again, his eyes going from the ball to the hole. He did that one more time before removing the coin, and then he backed off again before making the putt.I didnt want to give anything back, he said. I didnt want to make bogey. And he didnt. Walker went on to make 15-foot birdie putts on the next two holes, a 10-foot par putt on the 17th and closed with a 5-foot birdie and a 7-under 63.I remember when Jordan did that and I thought, That guy is playing some golf. Hes making more putts than anyone. You see that and think, Wow, I want to do that, Walker said. Ive watched Tiger do that — he did it a bunch. Im watching Rory do it now. Its cool. And its a step in the right direction. ' ' '
The Miami Heat will try to remain undefeated in this postseason Thursday night when they host the Brooklyn Nets for Game 2 of their Eastern Conference semifinals series at AmericanAirlines Arena. Kellyn Acosta USA Jersey . The Heat, the two-time defending NBA champion, swept the Charlotte Bobcats in round one, then knocked off the Nets, who went 4-0 against Miami during the regular season, 107-86, Tuesday. Dating back to Game 6 of the 2013 Finals, the Heat have won seven straight playoff games, which is one shy of tying the franchise record, which has been done twice. The Heat led by three points at the half Tuesday, but pulled away in the third quarter after outscoring the Nets 33-23 and shooting 70.6 percent (12-of-17) from the floor. They took a 13-point advantage into the fourth, where Miami cruised to victory. LeBron James had 22 points and five rebounds, followed by Chris Bosh, who posted 15 points and 11 rebounds. Ray Allen knocked down four 3-pointers off the bench and finished with 19 points for the Heat. Dwyane Wade had 14 points and Mario Chalmers added 12. The Heat shot 56.8 percent from the floor and only committed 10 turnovers. Their precision was impressive considering Miami hadnt played since last Monday after their sweep of the Bobcats. "I was concerned just a little bit about our rhythm and our flow because we were off eight days as far as playing a game," James said after practice on Wednesday. "When we got there, it was like we never missed a beat. Thats a great sign for us." Joe Johnson and Deron Williams netted 17 points apiece to lead the Nets, while Kevin Garnett went scoreless for the first time in his playoff career. "We need to attack them more than we did tonight," Garnett said. Marcus Thornton was the only other Brooklyn player in double figures with 11 for the second unit. The Nets advanced to the East semis after barely hanging on to beat the Toronto Raptors in a Game 7 at Air Canada Centre when Paul Pierce blocked Kyle Lowrys floater right before the buzzer. With the season sweep fresh in their minds, the Nets felt some degree of confidence and played with the Heat for the first half. Miami extended its halftime advantage with a 15-2 run during the middle stages of the third quarter. Bosh put in the first seven points of the surge, which included a triple and a three-point play from the Miami center, and Chalmers capped it with a layup for a 70-54 spread. The Heat built a margin as high 23 points down the stretch. "We know a lot of the things we did wrong defensively," Williams said after practice on Wednesday. "We made a lot of mistakes in our defensive gameplan. The focus going forward is keeping them out of the lane, keeping them from getting so many layups, so many easy baskets. When they do that, they get a lot of confidence and then they start hitting shots from everywhere." This is the third meeting between the two in the postseason and Miami has won the first two series. Game 3 of the series will be Saturday night when the action shifts to Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Graham Zusi Jersey . -- Albert Pujols is thrilled to have a reason to forget about his first two disappointing seasons with the Los Angeles Angels. Nick Rimando USA Jersey . Louis Blues and back into top spot of the TSN.ca NHL Power Rankings. The Sharks had been ranked No.BEREA, Ohio -- The Browns are down to one quarterback -- one healthy, though very shaken quarterback who has become a target for Cleveland fans. With Jason Campbell being treated for a concussion, Brandon Weeden, twice benched this season and a lightning rod for fan anger, will likely start this week against Jacksonville. Browns coach Rob Chudzinski said Campbell is following the NFLs protocol on head injuries after he was hurt in Sundays 27-11 loss to Pittsburgh. Campbell was knocked to the ground by blitzing Steelers cornerback William Gay, who came unblocked off the edge and delivered a blow to the quarterbacks facemask with his left hand. As he fell, Campbell also banged his head onto the frozen ground. The play was not caught by referee Terry McAulay or anyone in his crew for a penalty. Chudzinski, who plans to submit the play to the league office for review, said he was told by officials during the game that they thought Campbell was struck in the shoulder. "It doesnt seem like they miss that call very much," outside linebacker Paul Kruger said Monday. Campbell has not been ruled out of this weeks game, but Chudzinski said "chances are" Weeden, who began the season as Clevelands starter, will get the nod against the Jaguars. Weeden is the only quarterback on Clevelands roster, but Chudzinski said the Browns (4-7) will likely add a backup in the next few days. Teams typically work out players on Tuesday before signing them. The team will reportedly bring in free agent Caleb Hanie for a tryout. A former backup with Chicago and Denver, the 28-year-old was released by Baltimore before the season. Campbell came to the Browns training facility Monday before he was sent home. Hell undergo further evaluation this week and will have to pass a concussion test before he is cleared to play. Chudzinski said he spoke briefly with Campbell, who was assisted to the sideline and driven to Clevelands locker room after Gays hit. "I think he was OK, felt OK," Chudzinski said. Campbells injury places Weeden back in the crosshairs of some Cleveland fans, who vented their frustration at him during Sundays game. Weeden was booed when he came in for one play in the first half after Campbell aggravated a rib injury and again when Clevelands starter was knocked out of the game. The negative reaction by fans made an already unpleasant atmosphere in FirstEnergy Stadium worse. Bill Hamid Jersey. "Its difficult," Chudzinski said. "I understand the fans, the perspective and where theyre coming from on things. At the end of the day hes a Cleveland Brown and we need him to win and to help us win. I know that thats how the team feels about him." Browns linebacker DQwell Jackson said he has "always been behind Brandon from Day One" and sympathizes with him being singled out as a reason the Browns have dropped from the playoff race. "You could hear the boos around the stadium, but you have to block that out," Jackson said. "That comes with the territory. He plays a tough position. He takes all the credit when you win, and unfortunately he takes all the credit (blame) when you lose. "Im more than confident he can get it done. If hes up or if Jasons up, it doesnt matter to me who is back there. I know both guys are more than capable enough to help us win." Jacksons positive comments were not surprising. After all, hes a team captain, leader and perhaps the most respected player in Clevelands locker room. However, following Sundays game, both cornerback Joe Haden and safety T.J. Ward made remarks that seemed to indicate a possible divide among the Browns. Haden said there was a sense of deflation when Campbell went to the sideline the first time, and Ward bemoaned the teams four turnovers and offensive struggles. "Im tired of losing, thats it," Ward said. Chudzinski was aware of Wards comments and understands that some of his players are disappointed and angry. But with five games left, he cant allow any dissension. "Guys who arent frustrated or like losing, we dont want here anyhow," he said. "I talked to the team about the importance of us sticking together and this is the time when those frustrations come out, when you dont have as much success in a game that you want to have. We have a lot of football left to play this season." Jackson said Ward, in the final year of his contract, probably wishes he had chosen his words more wisely. "Im sure he regrets it," Jackson said. "He was speaking out of frustration. T.J. is a team guy. He wants everyone to do well." ' ' '
SAN JOSE, Calif. Wholesale Football Jerseys Throwback . -- Raffi Torres is making progress but its still unclear whether hell play for the San Jose Sharks in their playoff opener Thursday night against the Los Angeles Kings. Torres missed all but five games during the regular season after undergoing surgery on Sept. 26 to repair a torn ligament in his right knee. The Sharks forward missed the first 59 regular-season games and returned to play the next five of six before sitting out the final 17. Torres said he probably wont know until game day whether hell be in the lineup for the Sharks when the first-round series opens in San Jose. "Today was a better day," Torres said after practice Tuesday. "I feel like were getting on the right track. So I feel good about that. It will probably be Thursday when we make a decision, but today was a better day for sure." Sharks coach Todd McLellan said Torres "looked really good." "He looked fresh and alert and looked like he was Raff, the way hes supposed to look," McLellan said. Torres was injured on Sept. 20 in a collision with Anaheim Ducks forward Emerson Etem during an exhibition game. He underwent surgery six days later. After the NHLs break for the Sochi Olympics, Torres made his season debut on Feb. 28 against the Philadelphia Flyers and scored two goals in a 7-3 victory. He took the next game off then played four straight games, scoring a goal and recording two assists during that stretch as the Sharks beat New Jersey, lost to Carolina then beat Pittsburgh and Montreal. Torres appeared to have made a successful recovery from knee surgery, but that Montreal game on March 8 turned out to be his last regular-season appearance. "I got a few bounces to go my way," Torres said. "At the end of the day I just go by how I feel. Sometimes I feel terrible out there and score a couple goals, kind of how I did in Philly. I know physically I could be a lot better there. It was nice to contribute for five games, for sure, dont get me wrong. I just want to be able to feel good at the end of the game." Last season Torres played in only the first game of the Sharks second-round series against Los Angeles, which they lost in seven games. He was suspended for the rest of that series for a hit to the head of Kings forward Jarret Stoll. That marked the fourth career suspension for Torres. If he does play against Los Angeles, Torres plans to play his typical aggressive, hard-hitting game, but he knows theres a line he cant cross. "I understand that Ive got a little bit more of a target on my back," said Torres, who signed a three-year, $6 million contract extension in June. "Ill have to be careful out there, for sure." Losing Torres after Game 1 against the Kings last season was a huge blow to the Sharks, who had swept Vancouver in the first round. Getting Torres back to face the Kings this year would provide a big boost, Sharks centre Logan Couture said. "I dont know if he is going to (play), but hed bring energy," Couture said. "His style of game, hes hard on the forecheck. He creates momentum for our team. The crowd enjoys when hes on the ice. Hopefully, well get him back." Sale Football Jerseys Throwback . CNN and Gazzetta dello Sport reporter Tancredi Palmeri broke the news via Twitter Tuesday afternoon. Italian Football Association President Giancarlo Abete has also resigned, according to Palmeri.WINNIPEG -- Drew Willy likes to shine in the fourth quarter. And for the fourth time this season, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers quarterback guided his team to a late-game victory, the latest a 24-16 win over the Montreal Alouettes on Friday. Nic Grigsby ran 26 yards for a touchdown with just over two minutes left to lift Winnipegs record to 6-3, while Montreal (1-7) has now lost six straight games. "I definitely enjoy playing in the fourth quarters," Willy said. "I just try to stay calm, cool and collected. "I wish we would have played better in the first half." Willy completed 14-of-23 pass attempts for 200 yards, no TDs and one interception as Winnipeg ended a two-game losing streak. The teams didnt give the 29,881 fans at Investors Group Field much to cheer about in the first half, with Montreal taking a 6-1 lead into the break. But the second half was a see-saw battle with several lead changes. Grigsby capped off a six-play, 74-yard drive for the Blue Bombers that was helped when the Alouettes were called for pass interference. He finished with 10 carries for 73 yards, but was unavailable to reporters right after the game as he was selected for a random drug test. Winnipeg defensive back Maurice Leggett intercepted Montreal quarterback Jonathan Crompton with 1:44 left in the game, a pick upheld despite a challenge for a pass-interference call. Bombers kicker Lirim Hajrullahu then booted his third field goal of the game from 16 yards out to make it 24-16 at 14:07. Leggett had another interception -- his third of the game -- that he took to the end zone with 36 seconds left, but it was wiped out by a Bombers penalty. Alex Brink started at quarterback for Montreal, but Crompton replaced him in the second quarter. Alouettes head coach Tom Higgins told reporters the day before the game that all three of his QBs would get some playing time. Tanner Marsh went in the game in his usual short-yardage situation. "Its tough tonight," said Crompton, who was 18-of-29 for 266 yards, with no TDs and three interceptions. "No one in this locker-room really wants to lose this game. We didnt think we were going to lose this game. "Thats the good thing about this team, we always feel we can win every week. Weve just got to come back and correct it and go from there." Bombers head coach Mike OShea said there was no doubt on the sidelines that the team could come oout ahead on the lead changes. Clearance Football Jerseys Throwback. "They came out and they decided they wanted to get after it in the second half," OShea said of his players. "Special teams sparked it, they got it going." The first touchdown of the game was scored early in the third quarter when Bombers defensive back Don Unamba blocked a Sean Whyte punt. Winnipeg defensive back Derek Jones scooped the ball up at the one-yard line and ran in for the TD at 1:01 for the 8-6 lead. After Montreal went two and out on the next series, Whytes punt was returned 65 yards by Troy Stoudermire to Montreals 14-yard line. Willy then threw an incomplete pass and ran short on the following play, leaving Hajrullahu to attempt a 21-yard field goal. The ball hit the upright and Winnipeg retained its 8-6 lead with 11:05 left in the third quarter. Montreal was denied on third down with two yards to go and turned the ball over with just over six minutes in the quarter, but the Bombers couldnt do anything with the gift. It was all running back Tyrell Sutton in the Alouettes first touchdown drive. Crompton threw a pass to Sutton that he took down the sidelines for a 71-yard gain. He also ran for six yards and caught an 11-yard pass before he was hurt and went to the sidelines for a few series. The Als took the spot Sutton got them to at Winnipegs five-yard line and ended up scoring with quarterback Tanner Marshs one-yard run at 13:28 for the 13-8 lead. Hajrullahu then booted field goals from 22 and 24 yards to give Winnipeg the 14-13 lead with 9:12 to go in the game. But Montreal regained the lead after an eight-play, 61-yard drive capped by Whytes 21-yard field goal with 4:18 left. Whyte made three field goals and one attempt hit the upright. With 2:37 left and Winnipeg facing third down, Montreal was called for pass interference, leading to Grigsbys TD. "You just have to show resilience as a team and make sure that you continue to chip away at the opposition and make sure that youre doing the simple things right," Winnipeg offensive lineman Glenn January said. "I think that we shot ourselves in the foot several times with fumbles and dropped balls." The Bombers will be tested in their next two games, back-to-back tilts against Saskatchewan in the Labour Day Classic and at home the next week in the Banjo Bowl. Montreal hosts Ottawa and then Hamilton in the East Divisions tight race. ' ' '
